Extra police 'won't cut crime'

VICTORIA'S leading body representing the poor is urging Premier John Brumby and Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu to abandon their ''tough on crime'' policies and rhetoric in the lead-up to November's state election.

With polls pointing to increased fear of street violence and assaults on the public transport system, the Victorian Council of Social Service is warning that a pre-election law-and-order policy ''auction'' could actually make things worse.

In its 2010 state election platform, expected to be released today, the council rejects Mr Brumby and Mr Baillieu's view that more police equals less crime.

It says the best way to reduce crime and imprisonment rates is to tackle poverty, rather than put more police on the streets and enforce tougher sentencing by judges and magistrates
