A MAN'S car has been damaged in a frightening road rage incident on Brisbane's southside.

About 7.30pm, the 22-year-old was driving his silver Honda hatchback along Beenleigh Road at Sunnybank when he stopped at traffic lights at Woff Street.

A blue Toyota and white sedan pulled up nearby and two men from each car got out and approached the Honda.

They allegedly verbally abused and assaulted the driver and his male passenger before taking off.

A short distance later his car was cut off by one of the other vehicles, and a man armed with an axe hit the bonnet twice.

One of the alleged offenders has been arrested overnight but police are seeking any witnesses to the incident.

Metropolitan South Regional Inspector Peter Flori said police would not tolerate this type of behaviour on the roads.

"The incident will be investigated with tenacity,'' Insp Flori said.
