Ex-child soldier jailed for rape

LINK

June 26, 2010

A FORMER child soldier from Sudan was jailed yesterday for raping a woman who mistook him for a friendly neighbour.

Kondok Mario-Ring, 29, of West Moonah, told police the sex was consensual but in fact his victim was a lesbian who had not had sex with a man for 20 years.

The Supreme Court in Hobart heard the 45-year-old woman was moving into a new flat when Mario-Ring struck up a conversation over the fence.

When she went inside to make them both coffee, Mario-Ring forced himself upon her.

His first trial ended with a hung jury but he was found guilty of rape in a re-trial.

The court heard Mario-Ring's victim was traumatised by the attack and has needed ongoing counselling and suffers frequent nightmares.

"She has attempted to take her own life and suffers panic attacks when she sees a black male," Justice Shan Tennent said.

Mario-Ring came to Hobart in 1998 as a refugee from Sudan after enduring the violence of a civil conflict.

Justice Shan Tennent said cultural clashes had impeded Mario-Ring's ability to gain work in Tasmania and he was on a disability pension.

"This has resulted in a tendency to drink to excess," Justice Tennent said.

Mario-Ring's record included convictions in Tasmania for wounding, assaulting a police officer and assault.

He can apply for parole after serving 2 1/2 years.

Sacked QR guard says passenger violence harming staff health

LINK

June 25, 2010

A SACKED train guard who says he's saved 20 passengers from getting bashed during his career claims the mental health of QR staff is in crisis as violence plagues the Citytrain network.

The Courier-Mail can reveal QR-appointed psychologists have conducted 16 sessions in the past 11 months just for staff affected by assaults, and 424 for all work or non-work issues.

Latest figures show a staggering 1117 reports of disorderly conduct on Citytrains last year, with 236 reported assaults. (That's almost one a day)

Jon Stankevicius was dismissed in 2009 after 12 years as a Citytrain guard when he "snapped" at Bundamba station; kicking a teenager who had spat at him and challenged a passenger.

The same youth and his brother had previously pelted Mr Stankevicius with either rocks or full soft drink cans on two separate occasions when the guard tried to stop their rampage.

And while repentant for his last act, Mr Stankevicius has urged QR to better physically and mentally support all guards, drivers and platform staff facing violent and boozed passengers - particularly on Friday and Saturday nights - entering the city and Fortitude Valley.

He also took a swipe at QR's uniform non-intervention policy during disputes, which protects staff but lets passengers get attacked while guards watch and wait for police or security backup.

It was rarely an option for a man who stood up to the bullies but paid for it with his job and health.

"I thought I was in a war zone for a while," said Mr Stankevicius, 48, who suffers anxiety. "And part of the reason I'm talking to you is for the other staff.

"There have been that many marriage bust-ups and (mental) breakdowns - stacks, and a lot of (workers) fall back on alcohol.

"I spoke with my manager about the number of assaults on the trains and she sent me to a confrontation manager (who) I had a coffee with.

"She said I was morally correct and QR were the ones with the problem not dealing with the assaults."

Other QR staff approached by The Courier-Mail about escalating violence and the adequacy of support declined to comment on the basis they feared they might lose their jobs.

QR cited confidentiality when it refused to state how many staff had sought counselling because of passenger violence at work.

Man bashed for helping a bashing victim in Hornsby

LINK

A GOOD Samaritan has permanently lost the sight in his eye after being severely beaten as he helped a teenager who was being bashed by a gang of youths in Hornsby on Friday night.

Chris Ashbolt, 28, is now lying in Royal North Shore Hospital with a fractured collarbone, nose, finger and complete paralysis in the left side of his face. He is awaiting a third operation on his left eye to improve its appearance but the sight will never return.

Despite all of this Mr Ashbolt said he would do the same thing all over again and would not ask that his attackers be charged.

“I would say to someone else if you come across this situation, do what I did, because angels will protect you,” he said. “I’m still alive, I’m still functional.”

Mr Ashbolt and a friend were heading out for their usual Friday night kick of a ball in a local park around 10pm when they came across a young man surrounded by a group of between 10 and 15 men near the intersection of Albert and Linda streets.

“These two guys were holding him against a car and hitting and pushing him and one had his hand around his throat,” Mr Ashbolt said. “I just ran straight in and put myself between them and the kid and someone knocked me on the head from behind. I remember seeing the concrete coming.”

While his friend ran to call police Mr Ashbolt was kicked several times. He has been told that a witness found him, took him home and that he said he felt okay.

Mr Ashbolt has no memory of anything that happened until 1.40am when he woke up in excruiating pain and called 000. He was taken to Hornsby Hospital and transferred to Royal North Shore Hospital due to the seriousness of his injuries.

When speaking to the Advocate Mr Ashbolt was amazingly positive, saying how lucky he was to be alive and have sight remaining in one eye. He credits his faith and the support of Waitara Seventh Day Adventist Church and Hornsby Police detectives with helping him get through the ordeal.

“My character has been built out of this,” Mr Ashbolt said. “If I have a say, I wouldn’t want them charged. I just want them to get counselling so they don’t grow up to be adults who do this to their children or their wife.”

The group of men who attacked Mr Ashbolt were described as being of caucasian appearance, wearing “street or skater” type clothing.

Good Samaritan stabbed in domestic

LINK

June 25, 2010

A good Samaritan who was stabbed repeatedly in the back when he came to the aid of two women in Melbourne’s north yesterday remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital this afternoon.

The 65-year-old man’s alleged attacker is also recovering in the Royal Melbourne Hospital from gunshot wounds, after he was shot by police during a violent domestic dispute in Meadow Heights.

Detectives have placed the man under police guard and are waiting to interview him when his condition improves.

Police were called to the Paringa Boulevard address about 2pm yesterday after reports of a domestic confrontation between a man and his mother and sister.

Assistant Police Commissioner Tim Cartwright said the mother, aged 59, had fled the house after her son had choked her and her daughter.

She ran from the family home pleading for help and the good Samaritan, who was walking by, went to her aid.

"At that stage he came out of the house armed with a knife and stabbed the passerby in the back several times," he said.

Police arrived at the scene and went to the the aid of the two victims. By then, the man had returned to the house but he rushed back out to confront police.

"They called on him to drop the knife, he has not complied, he confronted the members and they sprayed him and the spray had no effect," he said.

Assistant Commissioner Cartwright said the man then lunged at a police officer with a knife and cut him.

He was then shot several times in the upper body by another police officer.

"I don’t think there was any other option other than to shoot him at that stage," Assistant Commissioner Cartwright said.

He said it was "horrific" that a man who had gone to the aid of a victim was now in hospital as a victim himself.

"Here’s a man doing what we hoped people would do - helping an elderly woman in distress," he said.

The policeman was taken to hospital and treated for a deep cut to his right arm.

The mother and her 22-year-old daughter were also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The policeman and the daughter have since been released, while the mother remains in the Northern Hospital.

Police were investigating whether the attacker, who earlier in the day had had a row with his sister, was suffering from any mental illness.

Neighbours said that they heard up to four shots fired during the dispute on the boulevard near the intersection of Pascoe Vale Road.

A pillow yesterday lay on the side of the street where neighbours had rushed to help the victims until ambulance crews arrived.

The police forensic team scoured the nearby pavement for clues, while homicide detectives were called in to assist in the investigation.

Assistant Commissioner Cartwright said it appeared that the confrontation had developed from a row into a far more serious situation.

Police are investigating whether a gunman who smashed his way into a Fitzroy restaurant last night was also responsible for an armed robbery in the same suburb earlier in the day.

A Victoria Police spokesman said the man was armed with a handgun when he threw a fire hydrant cover through the glass doors of the Brunswick Street restaurant just after closing about 10.50pm.

An employee who was finishing up for the night ran upstairs to raise the alarm before the the offender made off with an amount of money.

The man was last seen running across Brunswick Street, west along King William Street into a block of flats near Nicholson Street.

Earlier in the day a man armed with a gun held up a Tattersalls outlet in Brunswick Street, escaping with an amount of cash.

The female store manager was working alone just before 1pm when the man walked in and pulled out a gun from beneath his jacket.

"I thought he’s there to shoot me or he’s there to get the money. I had no idea what he was going to do," the 46-year-old woman, who asked not to be identified, said.

The gunman then crossed Brunswick Street before running off once he reached Victoria Street.

The woman was shaken by the incident, but not injured.

Detectives have released CCTV footage of the Tattersalls robbery and have appealed for anyone with information about the gunman to come forward.

The wanted man is described as Caucasian in appearance, aged in his 30s, about 183 centimetres tall with a medium build.

He has sharp facial features, blue or grey-coloured eyes and at the time of the the robbery was wearing a light coloured jumper with black square patches on the upper arms, a fluorescent yellow shirt, camel-coloured work pants and sneakers.

Detectives are appealing for anyone with information about either armed robbery to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.

Paedophile coach Faisz Marikar spared prison

LINK

June 24, 2010

OLYMPIC coach and paedophile Fiasz Marikar has been spared prison by a judge who ruled public humiliation and a ruined career were "sufficient" to stop him reoffending.

District Court Judge Gordon Barrett today suspended Marikar's five-year jail term on condition of a three-year, $500 good behaviour bond.

He said deciding to suspend Marikar's punishment for sexually abusing a teenage diver was "a difficult question".

"This is a serious offence against a child, a breach of trust that was part of an ongoing course of conduct, and you have shown no remorse," he said.

"On the other hand, you have been of good character for a long time, this was very uncharacteristic offending, you have already lost your job and, likely, your career.

"I think that those consequences would be sufficient to deter you from re-offending (and) I have concluded the mitigating factors outweigh the other considerations."

Rampage ends with spearing of puppy

LINK

June 25, 2010

POLICE on the Gold Coast are hunting five men who went on a rampage which left a cab driver battered, a service station sprayed with a fire extinguisher, and a puppy speared with a sharp wooden stake.

The drama began in the early hours of Sunday morning when the men flagged down a taxi at Tallebudgera and turned on the driver for no apparent reason.

Senior Sergeant Chris Ahearn from Palm Beach says the cabbie pulled into a service station where the assault continued.

"The driver was punched a number of times in the head and was spat on but fortunately his injuries are only minor.

"Disturbingly it seems these individuals have flown into a rage as soon as they got into the cab, there's no indication they were intoxicated ... there was no attempt at robbery, it just seems to be a senseless act of violence."

Sgt Ahearn said the service station attendant locked his door before the men could get inside but they found a fire extinguisher and sprayed it through a window.

What followed, he said, was the most disturbing.

As the men walked down the road a seven month old blue heeler puppy started barking at them.

The dog's owner Julie Nicholas said she and her husband were woken by the noise and men yelling just before 4am (AEST).

"My husband saw a big wooden stake in the yard and spotted the men down the street, but we didn't see that Tex was injured until later because the wound was hidden by his fur," she said.

"They used a sharp hardwood stake from a for sale sign up the road to spear him with and it just opened him up between the shoulders; he's really lucky it didn't hit him lower down or in the head because it could have killed him.

"It's good to see him so well now - he'll be fine - but it's a shocking thing to do to a dog and it's $800 we didn't need to spend just coming into the school holidays."

Sgt Ahearn said he's very concerned at the viciousness of the attack on a puppy which was in a yard behind a high fence.

"They were quite callous in the way they went about this attack, it's sickening and difficult to fathom," he said.

POLICE cordoned off a street in Corinda this afternoon and arrested a man they believed to be armed with a gun.

A police spokesman said a complaint was received this morning about the man's behaviour and Martindale Street was closed off as a precaution.

A battering ram was brought to the scene but was not used as the man was arrested without incident around 3pm.

Warning as girl grabbed by strange man

LINK

June 24, 2010

Police are warning parents and children to be vigilant after one young girl was grabbed by a strange man and another was chased by a stranger, in different parts of Sydney.

About 9am yesterday, a 10-year-old girl was waiting to catch her school bus in Eagle Vale in the city's south-west when a man got out of a white van in Chalcedony Street and grabbed her.

The girl escaped from the man's grasp and ran home.

Police have spoken to the girl, who was not physically injured, and now wish to interview a man with a moustache who has a five-centimetre scar on his left hand.

The man is described as Caucasian in appearance, 30- to 40-years-old, about 170 centimetres tall, with a thin build.

He was wearing a green T-shirt, blue jeans and black and white joggers.

Earlier, about 8.15am yesterday, a 12-year-old girl was walking to school in the western suburb of St Clair when a man began following her in Cook Parade.

The girl began running, and the man ran after her, but she arrived at school safely and reported it to staff.

Police are seeking public help to find a man of Indian appearance, solidly built, who was wearing a black hooded jumper, black track pants, and black shoes with yellow laces.

Police say parents should encourage children not to walk on their own, and to use footpaths where there are lots of other people.

Children should immediately alert a safe adult if they are approached by a person who makes them feel scared.

NSW Police to get new vests

June 24, 2010

NSW Police will soon have a new look with officers being issued with state-of-the-art vests similar to those worn by police in the US and Britain.

The state government has ordered 8000 of the "load-bearing vests" at a cost of $1.3 million.

NSW Police Minister Michael Daley today said about 2000 of the vests had arrived in Australia, and frontline police would begin training with them from next week.

"These vests are designed to prevent injuries, get injured officers back to work and reduce injury costs," he said in a statement.

The vests are designed to make it easier for police to carry all their equipment, which can weigh up to seven kilograms.

The new vests will distribute the weight around the upper body, instead of police carrying all their equipment around their waists on a leather belt.

The current leather belts worn by police are responsible for hundreds of injuries to officers each year because of their excessive weight.

The government tendered for the vests following the rollout of Tasers in October 2008.

The new vests have specially designed places for Tasers, capsicum spray, expandable batons, handcuffs and portable radios and will be worn in conjunction with the leather belt, which will continue to hold officers' firearms.

Ms Daley said the vests were about ensuring police have the latest in crime fighting equipment, while meeting their occupational health needs.

NSW Police Association president Scott Weber welcomed the government's announcement, saying the new vests would allow police to do their job more effectively.

"The vests will make it easier for police to carry the vital equipment they need while on the beat, while ensuring the occupational health and safety of officers is protected," he said.

"The equipment police officers are required to carry is vital to our work, but it can also be a health and safety issue for police, and that's why we have been campaigning for vests that can support the equipment we carry properly."

Police are hunting two armed robbers after a string of hold-ups in Sydney's inner west.

The men stole cash and goods at gunpoint in a 40-minute crime spree, raiding a betting agency, a bottle shop and a pub.

Just after 7.30pm yesterday, they entered a betting agency on Booth Street in Annandale, threatened a staff member and a customer and stole cash before fleeing on a motorcycle.

About half an hour later, the robbers confronted an 18-year-old man at a bottle shop on Kingston Road in Camperdown and ordered him to empty the contents of the cash register into a bag.

They sped away on the motorbike towards St Peters, where they entered a hotel on the Princes Highway 10 minutes later, threatened staff at gunpoint and stole cash, liquor and cigarettes.

They were last seen heading south on the Princes Highway on the bike.

One of the men is described as 180 centimetres tall with a slim build, and wearing dark-coloured clothing, gloves, a balaclava and a black motorcycle helmet with multi-coloured markings.

School worker slashed with knife

June 25, 2010

A primary school was locked down this morning as a worker on a school building site was slashed by a man carrying a knife and syringe.

Police confirmed a man was slashed at Sanctuary Point Primary School on the NSW south coast.

The alleged offender has not been apprehended.

While details of the attack are scarce, it is believed students spotted the man shortly before the incident.

It is understood the school was then locked down and the altercation occurred shortly after.

No students were injured.

The injured worker did not require treatment by paramedics.

A NSW Education spokeswoman refused to comment on the attack or confirm whether the school has since been reopened.

It follows an incident this morning in which a 14-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly threatening his classmates at Woolgoolga High School on the NSW north coast.

It is believed the boy threatened to shoot his classmates, causing the school to go into lockdown today.

"Students were confined to their classrooms as police confirmed there was no threat to public safety and parents were notified," police said in a statement.

No one was injured.

The teenager has been taken to Coffs Harbour police station.

Two men armed with large kitchen knives have robbed a young couple walking home in Curtin.

My comment - Here we go. TWO men armed with everyday garden variety kitchen knives commit a crime.

Let's imagine that you are a man. You are walking along the road with a female friend (sister? girlfriend? wife?). Two armed men threaten you and force you and your friend to your knees. What are you thinking? What's your friend thinking?

How can she EVER trust you to protect her in the future because YOU FAILED THIS TIME. What if those thugs bundled her into their car? WTF are you going to do? Call the cops? They'd have a video of her being molested uploaded onto the web before you finished blubbering the description to the Police.

I'm not catastrophising here. This blog is only young and I'm not even trying to collate ALL the victims of crime. Hell, the Police don't even know how many people are assaulted because they only know the number of people whom are assaulted and make a complaint. Try the A&E departments for a better idea but that'd only cover the assaults that require urgent medical aid. And you want to know the worst of it? The worst of it is that we only ever hear the newsworthy crimes. What's newsworthy? Certainly if I got bashed that's important to me. My sister-in-law was raped and that didn't make the local news. Just another dumb bitch in the wrong place.

Go on. Think for a moment what you'd do when confronted with two armed men. You know NOTHING of their intentions. NOTHING. And you want to get on your knees?

Police appeal for witnesses to come forward after a teenager was glassed at a Clifton Hill pub.

A teenager required stitches to his face after he was slashed with a beer glass while attempting to come to the aid of a female staff member at a Melbourne pub.

Police have released CCTV footage of a man wanted over the glassing at the Clifton Hill licensed premises early on Sunday morning.

The 19-year-old victim, Fabian, was trying to help a female staff member to calm an aggressive patron when he became the target of the man’s rage.

The Eltham teen required 11 stitches to his face and spent a night in hospital recovering from his injuries.

"This one guy started pushing her around so I’ve just said 'Relax, stop pushing her around', and then we’ve started arguing and then next thing I know I’ve got a glass to the cheek," Fabian said today.

"When I got to the hospital I sort of realised what’s going on and how bad it was. If it was just a few centimetres higher I could have lost my eye, had one eye for the rest of my life."

Detective Senior Constable Andrew Henneken said Fabian had been glassed with what appeared to be a Guinness pot, which was slightly bigger than a standard pot glass.

"The person ... has jammed it straight into the victim’s face, and it’s caused the glass to shatter and cause significant facial injuries to our victim,’’ Detective Senior Constable Henneken.

He said before the glassing, three men had been ejected from the hotel and began scuffling with security outside.

Hotel staff, including the female employee, had closed the front doors and prevented a crowd of people from exiting the building and potentially joining the fight.

"There was a female staff member from the hotel that was trying to do the right thing and keep everybody inside," Detective Senior Constable Henneken said.

"The male that we wish to speak to started giving this female a hard time because she wasn’t letting him outside.

"Our victim has tried to do the right thing and come to this female’s aid, and has since been assaulted in the altercation with the male."

The man police would like to speak to is about 186 centimetres tall, with sandy red hair and was wearing a dark suede-looking jacket.

Detective Senior Constable of the Victorian Police states "Our victim has tried to do the right thing and come to this female’s aid,"

So the right thing is to go to someone's aid when they are in trouble. But of course you are to do it unarmed and should the bad guy(s) be armed you, as the potential rescuer are potentially in serious trouble. In this instance the bad guy used an improvised weapon i.e. edged weapon, other (glass), additionally it would be a safe assumption to say that the rescuer had been drinking and therefore would not be armed under any sensible legislation.

Still my point stands. Victorian Senior Police Constable says that it is the right thing to go to someone's aid. However under every firearms law in Australia should you do the right thing you are to do so unarmed and no doubt out numbered. Good luck.

Lastly - this thug is still out on Victorian streets

A man has been taken to hospital after he was shot in the chest by a police officer in Melbourne’s north this afternoon.

Police say the man was attacking an officer with a knife when he was shot on Paringa Boulevard in Meadow Heights about 2pm.

The man, in his 30s, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious but stable condition, Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Susannah Wilson said.

Four other people were hospitalised as a result of the incident, including a police officer who suffered stab wounds.

Bashing pair have sentences reduced

June 24, 2010

Two men jailed over an unprovoked Geelong bashing three years ago have had their sentence reduced.

Michael Tancredi, an aspiring V8 Supercar driver, was sentenced last year in Geelong County Court to four years' jail with a minimum of two years and eight months, while Andrew Pamvouxoglou was imprisoned for three years with a non-parole period of two years after both pleaded guilty to recklessly causing serious injury in relation to the assault on June 15, 2007.

They appealed their sentence on the ground that sentencing judge Anthony Howard had erred in reasoning that they did not foresee the full consequences of their actions - namely the serious brain injury that victim Nathan Cafaro suffered.

They also argued that their sentences were manifestly excessive.

Court of Appeal justices David Ashley, Robert Redlich and Robert Osborn agreed and handed down their reasons this morning.

The sentencing judge had heard that Tancredi kicked a drunk Mr Cafaro in the chest and punched his jaw "so hard and effectively that he collapsed onto the pavement" after Mr Cafaro kicked an empty can in their direction and then punched a phone box as they walked past him as he waited for a cab at 1.20am in Moorabool Street.

Pamvouxoglou then kicked Mr Cafaro twice to his upper body as he lay on the ground in the foetal position.

A witness testified that the pair were "clearly hitting a person who was not able to fight back".

The men left Mr Cafaro bleeding and unconscious at the scene. They later returned to where the assault took place to find an ambulance and police present, but again drove off.

Justice Howard described the impact on Mr Cafaro as "horrendous". He required emergency surgery for a serious brain injury and endured six months of rehabilitation but has since fully recovered with no permanent brain damage.

The men handed themselves into police the following week.

The Court of Appeal judges found that "the appellants should be treated as having had foresight of serious injury, but not brain injury of the gravity actually sustained by the victim".

They ordered Pamvouxoglou to serve two years' jail with a non-parole period of 14 months and Tancredi to serve three years with a non-parole period of two years.

*********************************************

There you go. Give some drunk a flogging then get your sentence reduced because you didn't know that you could have caused serious injury resulting in the poor bloke requiring "EMERGENCY SURGERY" for a "SERIOUS BRAIN INJURY" fortunately the bloke recovered but only after "6 MONTHS REHABILITATION"

There was a witness who was great at telling the judge what s/he saw but that did a fat lot of good to the guy whilst he was sustaining an unprovoked beating.

Extra police 'won't cut crime'

VICTORIA'S leading body representing the poor is urging Premier John Brumby and Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu to abandon their ''tough on crime'' policies and rhetoric in the lead-up to November's state election.

With polls pointing to increased fear of street violence and assaults on the public transport system, the Victorian Council of Social Service is warning that a pre-election law-and-order policy ''auction'' could actually make things worse.

In its 2010 state election platform, expected to be released today, the council rejects Mr Brumby and Mr Baillieu's view that more police equals less crime.

It says the best way to reduce crime and imprisonment rates is to tackle poverty, rather than put more police on the streets and enforce tougher sentencing by judges and magistrates

Attack thugs repeat crimes

TWO Hobart men have faced court just months after being convicted of a cowardly attack on a Singaporean student.

This time is was for a violent attack on a Chinese university student.

Brodie John Cockshutt, 21, and Shawn Anthony Woolley, 20, appeared in the Supreme Court in Hobart yesterday after pleading guilty to aggravated robbery.

Another man, Jarrod Joseph Broadby, 20, also appeared on the same charge.

The trio admitted dragging Zauo Be Cheng along a Sandy Bay street for five metres as they tried to steal her handbag.

The court heard that Cockshutt initially tried to grab the bag after he jumped out of a van but Ms Cheng resisted and dropped to her knees.

Cockshutt then dragged her until the handbag strap broke.

The court then heard that Ms Cheng's friend, also an international student, came to her aid and Broadby and Woolley punched her in the face.

The men will be sentenced next week.

They have claimed the attacks were not racially motivated and only occurred because they were intoxicated.

Sentencing Cockshutt and Woolley in February, Justice Alan Blow made particular mention of the impact attacks on international students had on Australia's international reputation.

Cockshutt and Woolley were involved in an attack on student Poh Leong Kee as he tried to stop them stealing his Nissan Skyline at Sandy Bay.

The pair, along with New Norfolk man Aaron Nicholas Farrell, 19, received suspended jail terms.

The court heard Woolley punched Mr Poh because he refused to give him the keys to his car. He then punched Mr Poh's housemate Ting "Rachael" Xiang when she came to his aid.

Street attackers avoid jail

TWO thugs who attacked a Chinese woman just months after assaulting a foreign student have again escaped jail terms.

Brodie John Cockshutt, 21, and Shawn Anthony Woolley, 20, were each given suspended sentences yesterday for attacking and robbing a woman on a suburban Sandy Bay street.

At the time of the aggravated robbery, Cockshutt was on bail for attacking a Singaporean student during a botched car theft in Sandy Bay three months earlier.

Woolley, who also took part in that attack, admitted punching Poh Leong Kee when he refused to hand over his car keys.

Woolley and Cockshutt received suspended jail terms.

Last week, together with friend Jared Joseph Broadby, 20, they appeared in the Supreme Court in Hobart charged with attacking two Chinese university students on Grosvenor St on June 5 last year.

The three men, who pleaded guilty, got out of a van and ran after the young women, who were walking down the street about 6.30pm.

One of the women fell down when Cockshutt grabbed at her shoulder bag.

He dragged her along the footpath for a few metres, until her bag strap broke.

The bag, which contained all of her identification, was never recovered.

When the second woman tried to help her friend, Broadby punched her.

Justice Shan Tennent said the women were now afraid of going out at night time as "this cowardly attack has scared them badly".

But she said there was no evidence the crime was racially motivated.

"It was an opportunistic crime committed against young defenceless females who were unfortunate to be walking where they were," she said.

Justice Tennent sentenced each of the three men to eight months in jail, suspended on condition they be of good behaviour for three years.

Anger at fake security

HOBART pub and business owners are using dummy security cameras in a bid to save on security costs.

The frugal practice is thwarting police investigations and leaving attack victims feeling deceived.

The mother of a 17-year-old who was king-hit through a car window outside a Hobart pub earlier this month said she was shocked by the practice.

Amanda Paul said she had hoped CCTV cameras mounted at Montgomery's Hotel, where her son Joe was knocked out, would assist police in catching the violent attackers.

The assault left Mr Paul fearful of being on Hobart's streets and his friend, who was also attacked, had a broken nose and cracked teeth.

Mrs Paul said she was disgusted to find the cameras were fake and of no assistance to police.

"They want the public to think they've got it covered but they haven't. It's deceitful and misleading," she said.

"What's more concerning is it hinders police investigations."

Montgomery's Hotel owner Lesley Drake said security was expensive.

She said the hotel stepped up security measures several years ago by hiring guards to monitor the door but did not have real cameras.

"You try to have them act as a deterrent," she said.

Hobart CIB inspector Peter Powell said the use of dummy cameras was an issue.

"Some businesses work on the basis that it saves money and looks like [they are] working," he said.

"We say to all big businesses that cameras are a good idea."

Insp Powell said though cameras had proved useful in several investigations, they did not always help.

"Even when there is footage, it doesn't always give a clear indication," he said.

"It depends on where the action takes place and the angle of the camera.

"It has helped in the past but sometimes it doesn't always produce clear imagery."

Police recently used CCTV footage to arrest and charge a man involved in a violent attack in Elizabeth Mall.

Anyone with information on the assaults is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Hobart CIB on 6230 2603

But on Tuesday, two thugs forced their way into the 60-year-old's unit and attacked him, "stomping" on his head before binding his legs with electrical cord and his hands with duct tape and bashing him with a hammer.

"I got a boot to the face as soon as I opened the door and that took me straight over the couch," Mr Spencer told the Sunday Mail.
