AN angry reveller knocked a police officer unconscious after starting a brawl outside a Brisbane city centre nightclub on Friday.

A group of men were refused entry into the Down Under Bar on Edward Street about 9pm, which led to a fight with club bouncers.

Police were notified and tried to break up the scuffle when one of the men hit the officer and knocked him unconscious for a number of minutes.

The officer was taken to St Andrew's Hospital and required a number of stitches to his face.

A police spokeswoman said two men had been arrested in connection with the assault.
