June 23, 2010Police appeal for witnesses to come forward after a teenager was glassed at a Clifton Hill pub.
A teenager required stitches to his face after he was slashed with a beer glass while attempting to come to the aid of a female staff member at a Melbourne pub.
Police have released CCTV footage of a man wanted over the glassing at the Clifton Hill licensed premises early on Sunday morning.
The 19-year-old victim, Fabian, was trying to help a female staff member to calm an aggressive patron when he became the target of the man’s rage.
The Eltham teen required 11 stitches to his face and spent a night in hospital recovering from his injuries.
"This one guy started pushing her around so I’ve just said 'Relax, stop pushing her around', and then we’ve started arguing and then next thing I know I’ve got a glass to the cheek," Fabian said today.
"When I got to the hospital I sort of realised what’s going on and how bad it was. If it was just a few centimetres higher I could have lost my eye, had one eye for the rest of my life."
Detective Senior Constable Andrew Henneken said Fabian had been glassed with what appeared to be a Guinness pot, which was slightly bigger than a standard pot glass.
"The person ... has jammed it straight into the victim’s face, and it’s caused the glass to shatter and cause significant facial injuries to our victim,’’ Detective Senior Constable Henneken.
He said before the glassing, three men had been ejected from the hotel and began scuffling with security outside.
Hotel staff, including the female employee, had closed the front doors and prevented a crowd of people from exiting the building and potentially joining the fight.
"There was a female staff member from the hotel that was trying to do the right thing and keep everybody inside," Detective Senior Constable Henneken said.
"The male that we wish to speak to started giving this female a hard time because she wasn’t letting him outside.
"Our victim has tried to do the right thing and come to this female’s aid, and has since been assaulted in the altercation with the male."
The man police would like to speak to is about 186 centimetres tall, with sandy red hair and was wearing a dark suede-looking jacket.

Detective Senior Constable of the Victorian Police states "Our victim has tried to do the right thing and come to this female’s aid,"
So the right thing is to go to someone's aid when they are in trouble. But of course you are to do it unarmed and should the bad guy(s) be armed you, as the potential rescuer are potentially in serious trouble. In this instance the bad guy used an improvised weapon i.e. edged weapon, other (glass), additionally it would be a safe assumption to say that the rescuer had been drinking and therefore would not be armed under any sensible legislation.
Still my point stands. Victorian Senior Police Constable says that it is the right thing to go to someone's aid. However under every firearms law in Australia should you do the right thing you are to do so unarmed and no doubt out numbered. Good luck.
Lastly - this thug is still out on Victorian streets
